SCELSE PhD student Mr Calvin Ng Chun Kiat was selected for "Best Oral Presentation" award during the recent 2016 6th International Conference on Environment Science and Biotechnology (ICESB 2016) held in Kyoto, Japan.
Calvin works with Asst Prof. Cao Bin's research group at SCELSE and NTU School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). His winning presentation is entitled: "Engineering biofilm for remediation of environmental Chromium(VI) contamination".
Chromium is a metal commonly used in various industries due to its high corrosion resistance, hardness and shiny finish. Its widespread use has contributed to the release of chromium ions via wastewater into the environment. Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is toxic and carcinogenic to living organisms, and can cause serious consequences to aquatic ecosystems due to its high water solubility and mobility in the environment.
During the conference, Calvin presented his work on developing a biotic and an abiotic catalytic system for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated water. The biotic catalytic system consists of in-situ fabricated palladium nanoparticles in a living Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilm. This proof-of-concept demonstrates for the first time the interdisciplinary engineering of biofilms to develop biotic and abiotic nanocatalytic systems for sustainable remediation of environmental Cr(VI) contamination.
