Project Title: Evaluating anaerobic ammonium oxidising (Anammox) bacteria as an effective nitrogen removal agent for wastewater treatment plants in Singapore

Anammox is a biological process key to global nitrogen cycling and responsible for up to 50% of nitrogen turnover in the marine environment. Given the strict effluent-N concentration regulations for wastewater treatment plants, this biological process can be applied to cleaning used water far more effectively and economically than existing treatments. Samarpita’s project aims to analyse the Anammox community in Changi Water Reclamation Plant, understand anammox catabolism and the interaction of anammox with other nitrogen transformation pathways. Once the community functions and interactions are better understood, the next challenge will be to apply this process for mainstream treatment of used water.
