Biofilms are extremely resistant to antimicrobial agents and physical stress and cause a wide range of problems to industrial and hospital settings. The National Institute of Health (NIH) in the US estimates that 65-80% of microbial infections occurring in the human body are biofilm-mediated. For some pathogenic bacterial species, it has been shown that central processes in biofilm development are regulated by quorum sensing (QS), in particular those involved in shielding the biofilm bacteria from antibiotics and phagocytic neutrophils. In previous studies, sulfur-containing compounds and Zn complexes appear as interesting class of molecules capable of inhibiting quorum sensing. Chen Li is to using chemical method to screen potential QSI and also enable the detail mechanism study of QSI.
