Research Interest

Membrane biofouling – the deposition of bacterial cells and the growth of biofilm on membrane surface – is a major challenge in membrane filtration processes for water treatment. Jay's doctoral research focused on the biofouling control of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for wastewater treatment; the approach was to inhibit bacterial communication by quorum quenching. He is currently collaborating with Singapore Membrane Technology Centre (SMTC) in NTU to study the biofouling control of membranes in reverse osmosis (RO) system as well as in MBR. His current research focus can be summarised as follows:

1.     Biofouling control in RO system by bacterial quorum quenching

2.     Biofouling control in MBR and RO system by dispersing membrane biofilm with nitric oxide (NO) donors

3.     Microbial community shift in biofilm with consecutive dosing of NO donors

4.     Understanding the quorum sensing (QS) communicating mechanism of mixed community in a water environment
