SCELSE Seminar Series: Unveiling the Influence of Physics on Biofilm Biology

Date:    Thursday, 5 Oct 2023
Time:   10am – 11am
Venue: NTU School of Biological Sciences Classroom 3 (SBS-01N-23)

Abstract:
The biofilm matrix, rich in diverse extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), is a complex environment within biofilms. It plays multiple roles, including supporting social interactions, cooperation, resource sharing, adaptation to the environment, and resistance to chemicals and antibiotics. Historically, research on the biofilm matrix has mainly focused on the biological process. However, recent insights highlight that physical forces are influential in driving biological processes within biofilms. Recognizing the interplay between physical and biological factors is key to a comprehensive understanding of biofilm formation, dynamics, organization and function. In this presentation, I will give an overview of how physics plays a role in driving biological processes within biofilms. Furthermore, I will highlight examples of how we are using biophysical approaches at SCELSE to enhance the understanding of biofilms.

Biography:
Dr Binu specializes in biophysics, rheology, and microfluidics and is interested in viewing biofilms and biofilm matrix from a physics perspective to understand how the mechanical properties of biofilm matrix contribute to emergent properties. She is also interested in using biophysical approaches to detect/control/ prevent biofilms. She was awarded a Ph.D. in Physics at the National University of Singapore in 2010 and did her post-doctoral research at the Singapore MIT Alliance for Research and Technology. Her highlighted works include the study of the mechanical properties of biofilms and the mechanistic action of drugs on biofilms.
