SCELSE Facilities

Bioreactors

SCELSE has an extensive range of bioreactors to support research across a variety of fields, including environmental biotechnology and microbial ecology. Designed for both applied and fundamental studies, these bioreactor systems enable projects ranging from process optimization to the validation of ecological theories.

We have more than 30 laboratory bioreactors ranging from 2 L to 100 L in volume, with some units configurable for aerobic, fully anaerobic, or hybrid (aerobic–anaerobic/anoxic) operations, depending on experimental needs.

Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) SBR

SBR anaerobic digester

Over the years, the facility has contributed to multiple research efforts, including enhanced biological phosphorus removal at elevated temperatures, anammox-based nitrogen removal, investigations into the effects of process parameters on the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, and microbial protein production to support circular economy initiatives. It has also facilitated studies on ecological theories using controlled biological systems such as activated sludge and anaerobic digesters.
