Dr Joachim Loo is currently a full Professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He holds a joint appointment at the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. His research interests are in designing encapsulation systems for controlled and targeted delivery from agri-food, biomedical, environmental to pharmaceutical applications. He has published more than 230 journal papers (h-index: Scopus – 66), three book chapters, filed more than 20 patents in this research field, and has been listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists. He is currently Associate Editor of the American Chemical Society (ACS) journal Sustainable Resource Management. In 2022, he was awarded the Singapore Food Agency Science Excellence Award for his research on developing encapsulation systems for aquaculture. In 2025, he was awarded the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) Regional Professorial Chair award. Several of his patents have been licensed, and he has also spun off two companies. As an educator, he was awarded the prestigious Nanyang Education Award (School) in 2011 and 2016, the Nanyang Education Award (College) in 2020, and the Nanyang Education Award (University) – Silver in 2025. He was also conferred as Academy Fellow of the NTU Teaching Excellence Academy. Currently, he is managing several administrative portfolios, as Associate Dean (Undergraduate) at the College of Engineering, and also as co-convenor of the ISO/TC 229 Nanotechnology National Working Group (WG3), under the Singapore Chemical Industry Council. In 2021, he was awarded the Enterprise Singapore and Singapore Standards Council Commendation Award by Enterprise Singapore.
