A/Prof CAO Bin
Environmental Engineering cluster, SCELSE
School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, NTU

Dr Cao is an Associate Professor and the Associate Chair (Research) in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, NTU, Singapore. He is also a principal investigator (PI) at the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE), NTU. He obtained his PhD degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2008. He then worked on U.S. DOE-funded biofilm projects during his postdoctoral training in Washington State University and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Since joining NTU in December 2011, Dr Cao's research has focused on highly interdisciplinary topics on applied fundamentals of microbial biofilms to understand and address environmental sustainability issues.

Dr Cao's Environmental Microbial Biofilm Biotechnology (EMBB) research group focuses on understanding biofilm-mediated environmental processes and harnessing the power of microbial biofilms to address environmental issues. Specifically, his team uses environmental/(bio)chemical engineering, microbiology, and molecular/synthetic biology tools and develop new tools to:

  • Understand biofilm-mediated environmental processes and biofilm-contaminant interactions
  • Engineer microbial biofilms with defined structural and functional characteristics
  • Develop biofilm-enabled approaches for environmental biotechnological applications
