Dr Damien KEOGH
Senior Research Fellow

Dr Keogh’s research focuses on medical biofilms and infectious diseases driven primarily by Enterococci and their associated polymicrobial partners, which are frequently isolated from clinical infections. By developing in vitro biofilm assays and complementing them with in vivo clinical infection models, Damien’s studies are revealing novel Enterococcal virulence traits influenced by physiologically relevant levels of biometal. Underlying mechanisms provide explanations to how a normal human commensal bacterium can become the initiator of opportunistic mono- and polymicrobial infection. This work applies the state-of-the-art technologies available at SCELSE together with creative applications of fundamental methodologies to evaluate the role of biometals in the development of Enterococcal biofilms.
