Dr Carla LUTZ
Research Fellow

Dr Lutz's project interests are focused on understanding the evolution of bacterial virulence. Before joining SCELSE, Carla finished her PhD in microbiology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. During her PhD candidacy, she investigated the interactions that occur between marine bacteria and protozoa, specifically how marine bacteria defended themselves against protozoan predators. Her studies included examining the mechanisms that allow for intra-protozoan survival of bacteria, specifically the expulsion of bacterial laden pellets from Tetrahymena pyriformis into the environment. The mechanisms that allow intra-protozoan survival are analogous to pathogen survival within neutrophils of the human immune system and will be her area of study at SCELSE.
