Take in a whiff of the tropics! Studying airborne microbiota in the tropics, a team of researchers, including from the air microbiome research group in SCELSE, have found that these microbial organisms in the near-surface atmosphere follow a precise diel cycle and adhere to a specific timing for their presence.  Their study of tropical airborne biomass also demonstrates a richness and diversity of bacterial and fungal taxa in this understudied biosphere.

Paper: “Microbial communities in the tropical air ecosystem follow a precise diel cycle”, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 28 Oct 2019. DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1908493116
