A/Prof Cao Bin

PI, Biofilm Biology and Environmental Engineering clusters, SCELSE
Associate Professor, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, NTU

Email: bincao@ntu.edu.sg

Biography
Dr Cao Bin obtained his PhD degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering from National University of Singapore. He then worked on US DOE projects during his postdoctoral training in Washington State University and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He joined Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU) as an assistant professor in December 2011. He is now an associate professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Principal Investigator in the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE). In 2024, Dr Cao was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), UK, a prestigious honour that highlights his contributions to the field.

His research focuses on understanding biofilm-mediated environmental processes and leveraging microbial biofilms to tackle environmental challenges. Using tools from environmental engineering, (bio)chemical engineering, microbiology, and molecular/synthetic biology, his team aims to:
1. Unravel biofilm-mediated environmental processes and biofilm-contaminant interactions.
2. Engineer microbial biofilms with defined structural and functional characteristics.
3. Develop biofilm-enabled approaches for environmental biotechnological applications.
