Dr Joao Pereyra is a SCELSE research fellow in the Biofilm Biology cluster, under the supervision of A/Prof Rebecca Case. He is focusing on the development of transcriptomics methodology and analysis pipelines for marine microalgae, as well as investigating various facets of microalgal physiology. Joao is also using transcriptomic methods to genetically probe microbial-algal interactions. Prior to joining SCELSE, Joao undertook his PhD at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, in a research group specialising in cyanobacterial natural products. His PhD research employed molecular biology and genomics tools to investigate the biosynthesis of cyanobacterial neurotoxins, with a particular focus on elucidating the factors driving the formation and regulation of these toxins. Joao’s interest lies in the interactions of marine algae and bacteria, and the exploration of these relationships at the cellular level.
