SCELSE team uncodes genetic secrets through their eggshells, unhatched eggs and soil, to protect endangered sea turtles
In a special feature on FM89.3 Best of Breakfast, SCELSE’s PI and NTU Asst Prof Kim Hie Lim and SCELSE/NTU PhD student Regine Tiong share their groundbreaking research on hawksbill turtles. As these critically endangered creatures return to Singapore’s shores to nest, Kim and Regine delve into the DNA secrets hidden within turtle eggs, aiming to map population genetics and improve conservation efforts. Their work, using whole genome sequencing, promises new insights into turtle migration patterns and the impact of environmental threats (from oil spill to rising climate temperature), offering hope for this ancient species’ survival.
