Prof Wuertz is SCELSE’s deputy centre director (education and training) founding research director the Environmental Engineering cluster. His research interests include environmental biotechnology, biofilms in environmental engineering, detection of pathogens by molecular biology techniques, public health, QMRA, used water treatment, circular bio-economy, single cell protein production from wastewater as feedstock, microbial community dynamics, microbial ecology, and life cycle assessment in the context of circular economy projects.
During his time at SCELSE, Prof Wuertz has led a five-year Environment and Water Industry (EWI) programme grant Microbial communities in the used water cycle and another EWI grant on mainstream anammox processes in Singapore, both ending in 2018/19. He is currently PI on a competitive Research Programme (CRP) grant on Recovery and microbial synthesis of high-value aquaculture feed additives from food processing wastewater.
Prior to joining SCELSE Dr Wuertz lead research groups in Germany and the United States, focusing on the areas of biological used water treatment, public health, and biofilm research.
