Dr Zhao Xue
Research Fellow
Environmental Engineering cluster, SCELSE-NTU
Email: xue.zhao@ntu.edu.sg
Dr Zhao is a Research Fellow at SCELSE, working under the supervision of Prof Laura Nolan in the Environmental Engineering cluster. Her research focuses on microbial biofilm development and interactions within complex communities, particularly in the context of food chain biofilm biology. She will leverage global omics, advanced microscopy, and molecular microbiology techniques to study these processes. She aims to gain a fundamental understanding of biofilm dynamics in order to develop targeted interventions for biofilms or biofilm-associated microbes and contribute to sustainable solutions in environmental microbiology.
She completed her PhD at the NUS in 2021, focusing on understanding pathogen inactivation mechanisms in food matrices using GRAS sanitizers. Following her PhD, she was awarded a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship at Virginia Tech, where she developed novel platforms for detecting pathogenic bacteria and virus.
Dr Zhao aims to advance food microbiology by bridging basic science with real-world applications. She seeks to become a faculty member or scientist, focusing on microbial biofilms and biofilm-associated risks. Through interdisciplinary collaborations, she strives to develop practical solutions for food safety and public health.
