Dr Desmond Chua is a research fellow in the Environmental Engineering cluster under A/Prof. Janelle Thompson’s supervision. He was awarded a PhD in the field of environmental engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 2019 and started his postdoctoral career at SCELSE in 2021 in the field of wastewater surveillance. He specialises in environmental engineering and microbiology of human pathogens in wastewater with an interest in using wastewater surveillance to enable control of the spread of Disease-X. His highlighted works include revealing the co-incidence of Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 in Singapore’s wastewater as well as wastewater surveillance of human pathogens.
