TITLE: Chalk Talk: My first project transitioning from PhD/postdoc to independent research group
SPEAKER: A/Prof Chng Shu Sin, Associate Director, SCELSE-NUS; PI, Biofilms & Health cluster, SCELSE; Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, NUS
Abstract:
My research group studies the biogenesis and maintenance of bacterial cell envelopes, particularly focusing on outer membrane (OM) assembly and lipid transport in Gram-negative bacteria. The Gram-negative OM is an asymmetric lipid bilayer that is essential for growth, and is critical as a permeability barrier that confers intrinsic antibiotic resistance. In this chalk talk, I will share how I chose my research questions for my independent group, and discuss the long journey in one of the first projects in my laboratory to understand OM lipid homeostasis. My sharing will be interactive, with opportunities for participants to brainstorm the directions for this project from start till now, and into the future.
Biography:
Associate Professor Shu-Sin Chng completed his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University. Following a short postdoctoral stint at the Harvard Medical School, Shu-Sin returned to the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2011 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. He has been a principal investigator at SCELSE since 2012. In 2018, Shu-Sin was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.
