New Leadership at SCELSE: Prof Cynthia Whitchurch Appointed Research Director

Congrats Professor Cynthia Whitchurch on your new appointment as Research Director (RD) for the Biofilm Biology Cluster at SCELSE with effect 1 Oct 2024. Prof Whitchurch, who joined SCELSE in August, brings a wealth of expertise in biofilm biology, particularly in areas like extracellular DNA, biofilm matrix components, host colonisation, and the development of antimicrobial resistance. Before joining SCELSE, she led pioneering research groups in Australia and the UK.

Centre Director, Prof Alain Filloux said:
“Cynthia is a great fit for this position, and I am confident that her expertise will greatly benefit the Biofilm Biology cluster. Her innovative approach to understanding biofilms aligns perfectly with SCELSE’s mission to advance scientific understanding and create translational impact.”

SCELSE Advisor, Prof Staffan Kjelleberg said:
“Cynthia, a world leader in understanding fundamental aspects of biofilm biology, is an excellent choice to lead the cluster. Her leadership will further our exploration of biofilm biology in both basic and translational research across various ecosystems.”

As the new RD, Prof Whitchurch will guide SCELSE’s Biofilm Biology Cluster toward groundbreaking research that pushes the boundaries of understanding bacterial lifestyles and biofilm development. We are excited about the future innovations under her leadership and look forward to her contributions to both basic science and real-world applications.

Join us in welcoming Prof Whitchurch to her new role!
